Heavy-duty kerb guards. Engineered with extra-thick, abrasion-resistant sidewall rubber and a bead-to-bead protective layer, the Michelin XZU3 resists kerb scuffing and side-impact damage common in stop–start urban service. Dual-side protection allows flexible tyre rotation across steer and trailer/drive positions, reducing casing scrappage from sidewall cuts. A co-extruded sidewall compound stack balances high cut/tear resistance on the exterior with low-hysteresis materials internally to limit heat build-up, preserving cord integrity and bead area fatigue life. The result is fewer unplanned removals, higher usable mileage, and improved retreadability for better total cost per kilometre in city bus and waste fleet operations.

Full-depth tread siping. The Michelin XZU3 features dense, full-depth sipes and zigzag grooves that maintain biting edges from new to end of life, enhancing wet braking and lateral grip on diesel-slick surfaces and polished intersections. Interlocking sipe geometry stabilises tread blocks under load, limiting heel–toe wear and feathering during tight turns and frequent stops. Wide evacuation channels accelerate water dispersal to minimise hydroplaning onset at urban speeds, while multi-angle micro-edges generate capillary action to cut through film thickness. Consistent edge density across the footprint supports predictable steering feel and braking performance as the tyre wears, extending safe service intervals.

Cool-running urban compound. A purpose-built compound package pairs a low-hysteresis undertread to shed heat with a high carbon black, cut/chip resistant cap optimised for scrubbing on coarse chipseal and bus lanes. By reducing internal energy losses during repeated acceleration, braking, and kerbside docking, the Michelin XZU3 keeps carcass temperatures in the optimal range, protecting the belt edges and bead apex from thermal fatigue. Lower running temperatures reduce oxidation of skim stocks, improving cord adhesion and casing integrity over multiple retread cycles. The compound’s abrasion index and glass transition temperature are tuned for year-round urban service, balancing rolling resistance, wet grip, and wear to lower fuel use without sacrificing durability.

Reinforced all-steel casing. Built on a robust, all-steel radial carcass with high turn-up plies and a protective belt package, the Michelin XZU3 delivers exceptional structural stability under high load and continuous stop–go duty. A reinforced bead bundle and stiff bead apex distribute clamp load uniformly on the rim, reducing micro-slip and heat concentration in the bead seat during frequent curbside manoeuvres. Optimised belt angles and edge treatments control shear at the belt ends, mitigating initiation of fatigue cracks that can limit retreadability. The casing architecture is designed to accept multiple retreads with consistent footprint shape, maximising asset life and reducing whole-of-life cost for urban fleets.

Wide, stable footprint. A wide 5-rib pattern with broad, semi-continuous shoulders produces a square contact patch that evens out contact pressure, reducing rapid shoulder wear from tight-radius turns and roundabouts. The Michelin XZU3’s tread geometry resists block deformation under lateral load, lowering slip angle for precise steering and shorter stopping distances on wet pavement. Enhanced footprint stability suppresses irregular wear modes such as river wear and cupping, extending even-wear mileage. The stable platform also attenuates tread block vibration, lowering in-cabin noise for bus passengers while maintaining consistent grip and predictable handling across the tyre’s service life.
